Stem and crown ages for major fern clades

The table below provides crown and stem ages for fern orders, suborders, families, subfamilies, and genera, calculated directly from the current dated, consensus tree (FTOL v1.8.0). Because it is generated automatically from FTOL, these ages will update as the tree grows and dating estimates are refined with each new release.

Crown age is the age of the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all species sampled in FTOL for a given taxon. Stem age is the age at which that taxon diverged from its sister lineage, i.e., the age of the node immediately ancestral to the crown node. Ages are in millions of years (Ma). The Order and Family columns show the higher classification of each taxon (Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group I 2016) and can be used to filter the table; only Polypodiales is formally divided into suborders, and not all families are divided into subfamilies.

Some taxa are not recovered as monophyletic in FTOL (see the Monophyletic column); for these, ages should be interpreted with caution, since the MRCA may also subtend species from other clades. Taxa represented by only a single sampled species have no meaningful crown age (shown as NA).
